"Why Political Scientists Should Support
Free Public Higher Education"
The October 2003 issue of PS – the journal of the American Political
Science Association (APSA) – features an article on the Campaign
for Free Higher Education written by Preston H. Smith, II, Mount
Holyoke College and Sharon Szymanski, Labor Institute. APSA is the
leading professional organization for the study of political science.
The article, "Why Political Scientists Should Support Free Public
Higher Education" cites two main reasons: 1) more access to higher
education will mean more participation in the U.S. political system
and 2) the best guarantee of academic freedom is increasing citizen
access to our classrooms and laboratories.
